What this area is
Strip any of the lab's problems down to its mechanics and the same formal structures keep reappearing — stochastic processes, optimization under constraint, the geometry of high-dimensional spaces. This area is where those structures are studied on their own terms rather than in service of one application. Today it is largely a connective layer beneath the other areas.
Opening this area
